Description

| 141 South First Street. Two sets of pictures were taken with the first being June 2, 2006 and the second being taken on November 26, 2006. The second set was taken to confirm I didn't make a mistake the first time. The photo taken for the 2003 survey has NO address visible on the house so it's possible Napoli guessed incorrectly. The 2003 Napoli photograph is photograph 20 of the images attached.
Napoli has this structure with the address of 151 South First Street but this is clearly incorrect, at least in 2006 as the address on the house is 141 in 2006. Napoli's description of the property follows:

P3a. Description: This single-story house has a nearly pyramidal roof, horizontal board siding, and a raised basement. Windows have projecting hoods, wide wood frames, and wood sashes. A shed-roofed porch with Tuscan columns extends across the front elevation. The front door, centered on the elevation, is topped by a transom window. To the left is a bay window, to the right a single window. The front stairs, which have a plain, board railing, lead directly to the door. The door and stairs are not original. In the rear is a gable-roofed extension to which a shed-roof addition has been appended. No other alterations are apparent. In the rear facing south is a two-car garage. Four orange trees line the lot on the south. The property's boundary is its current parcel.

The origins of this house are not clear. Its most conspicuous architectural features—the full-width front porch with a low wall, the Tuscan porch columns, and the nearly pyramidal roof—suggest a construction date just after the turn of the last century. But the Sanborn fire insurance maps show no change in the footprint of the building between 1884 and 1945. One explanation is that the house was put up around 1875 with an Italianate look and was later remodeled in the Colonial Revival style. In any case, the building clearly illustrates small-scale residential construction from around 1900. It might be eligible for the National Register and the California Register if few other intact examples remain in town.
