Library Policies - Materials Suitability

INTRODUCTION

Dixon Public Library’s role is to provide local residents with learning opportunities and equal access to information and resources regardless of format. While the library endeavors to provide materials which meet this purpose, the library also assumes the responsibility of including, within budgetary and space limitations, collection materials selected in a professional manner which reflect the diverse opinions and preferences of its patrons.

Materials included in all Dixon Library print and non-print collections along with usefulness of Web Site links are selected in accordance with The American Library Association’s (ALA’s) BILL OF RIGHTS, FREEDOM TO READ and RESOLUTION ON THE USE OF INTERNET FILTERS statements. All decisions regarding suitability of content issues will be made in accordance with the same ALA statements.

PRINT AND NON-PRINT MATERIALS

Dixon Library is responsible for the selection and inclusion of the materials available in its print and non-print collections. Resources are placed in these collections based on the following considerations: usefulness of information, collection needs, expected patron usage, timeliness of subject matter, and the amount of similar items already found in the collection. Normally, content is not at issue for the library

Print or non-print materials, which a patron may consider objectionable, may be brought to the District Librarian’s attention.

ELECTRONICALLY AVAILABLE MATERIALS

Dixon Library is responsible for its Home Page and for the selection of its Web Site links. The Dixon Library is not responsible for the contents of any materials electronically available on any link-accessible Web Site. Links to external Web pages are placed on the Dixon Public Library Home Page based on the following criteria: usefulness of information and patron’s expectation to easily access that data.

Information found on any Dixon Library-linked Web Site, which a patron may consider objectionable, may be brought to the District Librarian’s attention.
